Does international recession mean less work for translators?
As the World has officially entered a global recession, will this or has this already affected the translator community out there? Are there less businesses needing translation services as a consequence? Are business worried to spend their budget on Foreign speaking Markets?
As a community of translators, each story and experience is welcome.
Not necessarily, however, as freelancers or translation agencies, you should lower your prices in order to get as more work.
I reckon in a few months the so-called recession will just be a “thought” from the past, so keep the work up and be positive!
A few months? I have to disagree with you there Dora, I think this is going to last a couple of years at least! It is going to be a rocky ride for everyone, a bad time translators and even more so for translation companies.
The thing I am worried about is that new less experienced translators will put out of work the experienced translator due to the fact they are cheaper. Price seems to be what matters nowadays, not quality.
As a sworn translator I haven´t really noticed anything different with the “Credit Crunch”, maybe the prices to charge are lower but the workload is basically the same.
This would be an opportunity to reach out to audiences beyond their comfort zone because small business would begin to get more attention. Minus the overhead charges and the same high quality, this would time for smaller translation groups to rise.
I can personally notice more competence and that prices have dramaticaly dropped. As I consequence it is more difficult and less profitable to offer professional translation services as you know the client will just use the cheapest service.
Como traductora he notado una bajada en el sector de la traducción, pero supongo que la crisis ha afectado a todos y cada uno de los sectores, ya sean traducciones, construcción, comercio en general.
Hay que buscar nuestras estrategias de negocio para así superar el bajón y reponernos.
Por otra parte puedo decir que he recibido más proyectos importantes que el cualquier otra época, lo que quiere decir que hay trabajo de traducción pero también mucha competencia y eso es precisamente lo que hacen las grandes empresas, pedir presupuestos a diferentes profesionales de la traducción y quedarse con el más económico.
Para mi la calidad en una traducción es más importante que el precio.
The only time I notice less work load is in the summer and holiday periods, which seems something logical to me. However, i believe there is always demand for translations no matter what time of year it is
